Apple Maps as an event accompaniment and advertising space: Shortly before Monaco’s Grand Prix, the city state receives a detailed city view in Apple maps. This shows additional elements such as lane markings, pedestrian strips and trees as well as specially designed 3D buildings. In Monaco, this includes the casino, the yacht club and the Hotel de Paris, as Apple announced.
In addition, details about the Formula 1 major event flow into the map service, including the racetrack with markings of the well-known curves and the finish line. Apple promises that the corresponding road closures are also recorded.
Advertising for Apple’s Formula 1 film
For the first time, the detailed view also receives prominently placed advertising signs that Apple uses for cross-promotion: The racing film “F1” produced for the in-house streaming service is advertised thematically. Apple Maps also receives a special Formula 1 overview, which includes information on other known racetracks.
Apple has reportedly paid a good $ 130 million for the rights to the feature film alone. At the beginning of the year it was speculated that the budget ultimately exceeds $ 300 million-a sum that producer Jerry Bruckheimer Opposite the magazine Deadline as too high. Sponsoring on the film racing car gave you more money than some real Formula 1 team, said Bruckheimer.
The feature film is important for Apple’s streaming service. Previous – also costly – film projects met with little interest. Apple recently dropped its cinema ambitions significantly and increasingly relies on TV series, the group puts billions in content production.
Detailed cityscapes in Apple Maps still rarely
The detailed cityscapes in Apple Maps are still rare, in Germany the service has only covered Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. In contrast to Google Maps, Apple has so far refrained from financing the card service by advertising – even if there were always speculation about corresponding plans. Apple’s important service business is currently under pressure: In the United States, app commissions could break away from the group, as can an annual multi-billion amount from the Google search deal.
