PayPal wants to position itself as an alternative to the contactless payment services of Apple and Google. In the course of the summer, the company will integrate its own mobile wallet into its own app, with which customers can pay for pay terminals in shops with their smartphones. According to PayPal, Germany is the world’s first market with the function.
PayPal uses iPhones opened by the EU opened NFC interface
As the company writes, consumers can pay with the latest version of the PayPal app via “TAP-to-Pay” wherever contactless Mastercard payments are accepted. The app also receives an overall overview of online and offline purchases.
The payment function is offered for both Android devices and iPhones. This option is a special feature, especially for iPhone owners, since there has been no way around the Apple wallet. By forced to open the iPhone’s NFC interface by the EU, other providers can now also offer contactless payment with the iPhone. The Norwegian payment app Vipps started at the end of 2024 at the end of 2024.
According to the folk and Raiffeisen banks, PayPal is the second provider who wants to use the iPhone NFC interface for own purposes in Germany. Both have only announced their payment options at the moment, but have not yet released. There are no restrictions on the NFC interface on Android devices, as Apple has so far practiced it.
PayPal with “installment payment to go”
Similar to the online shopping, PayPal offers a “installment payment to go” for purchases in the shop. Users can choose between three, six, twelve and 24 monthly installments. The application is made in the PayPal app.
PayPal also introduces a cashback system in which users can receive premiums for certain purchases in the app. This only applies to payments that are made contact with the PayPal app in the shop. PayPal only wants to announce concrete details about partners or discounts later.
With its new offer, PayPal joins the Mobile Payment market by NFC quite late. Apple and Google in particular are likely to hold market leadership due to the applications pre -installed in the operating systems. For consumers who do not have a credit card required for Apple’s and Google services, PayPal’s solution could be a new option to use their smartphone to pay.
