When Apple 2020 presented Macs with Apple Silicon for the first time, observers immediately thought that the group would very quickly file to re -born the compact MacBooks of all time. On March 9, 2015, Apple presented the MacBook Retina, which was still called MacBook Retina, at an event in San Francisco. According to CEO Tim Cook, it was proud at the time, a “reinvention” of the notebook. The hardware was actually impressive: a high -resolution display met a comparatively easily usable Intel Core M with 1.1 GHz without a fan. The device weighed just 920 grams, was even (significantly) lighter than a 12.9-inch IPAD Pro with keyboard.

The machine was not a miracle box for multimedia applications, but actually used adequately for daily use in the office and even for some video and audio cutting. Above all, due to the low weight and the compact dimensions, you didn't have to worry about having no space for you. The 12-inch player also worked great in close aircraft. Only the butterfly keyboard could be annoyed if it failed because of dust penetration.

Apple granted a total of three generations to the 12-inch MacBook. In addition to the first of 2015, those who delivered newer core processors in 2016 and 2017, after M models, finally also an i5 and even an i7. This made the compacts more usable for more professional applications. In 2019 Apple finally decided to take the product line out of the program, it was deleted without replacement. Since then there have been only MacBook Pro in different variants and the MacBook Air. Its 13-inch model is also compact, but still significantly more voluminous than the MacBook with 12 inches. The machine also weighs over 1.2 kilos.

It remains unclear whether Apple has mercy one day to bring a really compact MacBook under a kilo of weight. There are no current rumors. The Apple-Silicon chips would actually be ideal: the MacBook Air with the new M4 can also do without a fan.
